Cold Weather Cocktails!

Guys. It's cold outside. Record-breaking cold.
So, we decided we really needed some cold weather cocktails to warm us up!
First: The Hot Toddy

What is a hot toddy?
2oz bourbon
2 Tbsp honey
1 Tbsp fresh lemon juice
Garnish with lemon slices and cinnamon sticks
Heat water in a saucepan until simmering
Combine bourbon, honey, and lemon juice in a mug
Carefully pour in 1/3 cup hot water and stir until honey is dissolved

It's not known for sure when this was first invented. Some say it was inspired by a drink made from the fermented sap of palm trees that the British discovered during their occupation of India (adapted from Hindi word taddy), though others think it was invented by Irish doctor Robert Bentley Todd, who used it as a medicinal drink.
Either way, this is a light and satisfying hot drink for a cold day. We agree with using it as a medicinal beverage, too, as it reminded us of drinking hot tea with lemon, a well-known cure-all when you're sick! We definitely enjoyed this one.
Second: Hot Buttered Rum

What is hot buttered rum?
There are many recipe variations, but we tried this one:
1.5 oz spiced rum
3-4 oz hot water
1 oz spiced buttered sugar
(7oz butter, 1 3/4 cups brown sugar, 1 pinch nutmeg, 1 pinch cinammon, 1 pinch cloves all melted together in a saucepan)
Garnish with cinnamon stick
Add spiced buttered sugar to mug
Add 3-4 oz hot water and stir until dissolved
Add rum
Hot buttered rum dates back from the 1650s, when Jamaica was importing molasses to colonial America. This one is a much heavier and richer drink, more like a dessert all in itself. This was good, but it would be hard for us to drink very much of it with how rich it is! The butter really kicks up the fuller mouthfeel on this one. Drinking it, you feel like you should be sitting at a blazing fireside on a snowy night.
Try these out these next couple of freezing days! And let us know if you have other delicious hot cocktails to try! We're always game to try something new.
