After a kindergarten concert, many of us proud families ended up at Ziggy's Pizza to celebrate. It's an absolute fam favorite, ever since Katie's husband accidentally walked into the original Ziggy's Friends and Family soft opening night, where he was certainly not an invited guest. But Ziggy's welcomed him with open arms anyway, and we have loved every visit back ever since!

While there, though, Katie's aunt asked what wine she should get with her pizza, and we immediately knew we needed to do some Ziggy's wine pairing. Wine and pizza go beautifully together!

If you're looking for a general rule about food and wine pairing, then know that wine often goes well with the food from the same place. They grew up together, and they play well together. So with pizza, Chianti from Tuscany in Italy is typically a pretty good choice. It's made from a grape called Sangiovese. Ziggy's is well aware of that, and they have Chianti on their menu! We ordered the Banfi Chanti Superiore 2021.

Like your classic Chianti, this one smells like red strawberries, but also balsamic and even sweet tomato sauce. Hence, it goes fantastically with Italian foods. It's a nice little wine with some earthiness to it as well. When we drank this with the pizza, the pizza makes the wine even smoother, and the two together are a delight. This wine went particularly well with the pepperoni and the Meat Me pizza. It wasn't quite the right pairing with the Sanibel Islander pizza with ham and pineapple (Katie's favorite pizza--pineapple absolutely goes on pizza). But do you know what was?

We present the next wine we tried: the Bogle Family Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon 2020.

We enjoyed this one. You get the aromas of blackberries and black cherries, as well as a scent of dill (not the pickle, the spice) from the American oak it ages in, but it's not overly oaky. That oak, which can come across a little as vanilla as well, along with the big fruit in this wine, make it ALMOST have a slight sweet edge (but it's not sweet). That very slight sweet edge makes it pair beautifully with the Sanibel Islander pizza, which has some sweetness from the pineapple. Go try this combo! We can't wait to try it again!

So go enjoy some family time at Ziggy's this weekend, and check out their wines as well! You'll be so glad you did!
